Persistent formatting options / markdown syntax support for notes

Right now, formatting your notes is hard because you can't tell the app what you want to format without highlighting the text after it's written, and you can't use Markdown to format text either, making things like code blocks really hard to work with. Would be nice to be able to format using markdown, or at least have some sort of formatting control before you type into the notes field.
